by Tyler Williams

Well my friends, it's been a while.

How are you? What's new? What's getting old?

Today I published my 5th episode of "Hear Me Pod" featuring an interview with my associate conductor and keyboard 1 player at Le Rêve, Angela Chan. She and I have been close friends for a long time. I think this episode turned out great! I really appreciate my friends and family who have encouraged me to keep going on this little endeavor. Thank you.

Here's the direct link to the episode!

I've also been playing a few gigs here and there. Things are picking up, but the delta variant is f-ing things up a bit as well. Please get your vaccination and do your research away from social media!

Anyway, the is just a quick pop in to say hello and share the latest "Hear Me Pod" episode.

I have more interviews and music to share with you very soon!

Be well, and thanks for reading.

Thanks,
Tyler

by Tyler Williams

Well..it's been a minute!

Hello friends! I've been very "musically" busy lately. I had 2 broadway style gigs here in Las Vegas last week, which involved a lot of prep, rehearsal, and technical attention. I also delivered my first bass lecture/presentation at the 2021 International Society of Bassists Convention. It was supposed to be in person in Lincoln, Nebraska, BUT...COVID.

I was grateful for the recent gigs, to say the least. Freelancing is my new reality, and I'm humbled by the experiences to play music with new colleagues. Reading new music is also a blast!

I'm also pleased to be back in blog/podcaster mode... Episode 3 of Hear Me Pod dropped today!

Today's podcast guest features an interview with my friend and singer Andrew Ragone. Andrew was the newest member of the Le Rêve band before we closed last summer. He's an outstanding performer and has a heart of gold. Please enjoy this via the podcast website, or wherever you get your podcasts. (I'm still working on some of the distribution sites)

More Le Rêve band member interviews are coming, stay tuned!

Many of you have kept encouraging me to keep going with my podcast and blog. Thank you so much! I'm really grateful for the interest as it keeps me motivated.

Hello!

I just wanted to officially announce that my new podcast has officially dropped!

Thank you for supporting me with your messages, texts and phone calls. I had a few hiccups with the setup and figuring out the hosting/distribution. It’s all a process and I truly think it has been a real personal test during this dumpster fire of a year!

Thanks again for your support and stay tuned for my upcoming episodes with the Le Rêve band!

Cheers,

by Tyler Williams

Hello!

I've been going through some growing pains with some of the things I've been working on lately. It's been quite a year of change for many of us, but I'm happy to say I'm back and ready to share again. Thank you for reaching out to me through this blog and other means. May the music and intentions continue!

I'm proud to announce that I have a new podcast debuting in May! It's called Hear Me Pod a podcast about music, the tools we use, and the intentionality behind our actions.

Here's the trailer.

Next week, my first full episode will drop on April 27, 2021! My first guest is a good friend, actor, musician and all around great guy, Marcus Weiss. He's got quite an impressive resume and I think you'll enjoy our chat.

I will also be sharing some wonderful conversations with the entire Le Rêve band in May! (more news on that soon)

Also, I'm proud to announce that I'm able to sell my CD again through my website. Right now it's on sale for only $5 (minimum) with free shipping! This is sort of an experiment for me to see if anyone still wants a CD these days! It also comes with a free download as well.

I hope you have a great week and we shall chat again soon.

Thank you for your support!

Day 100!

Well...I did it, 100 blog days in a row. The emailed newsletter is weekly. Sorry for the confusion.

To be honest, I had a few days run amok these past couple of weeks. However, I think the process went pretty well!

Thanks to all who have looked at this blog or newsletter as this has been a great exercise thus far.

Next week, I'm shifting my distribution process . The blog/newsletter will become a weekly check in and it can arrive in your mailbox, RSS feed (which I'm still learning about) or the many social media methods of madness. Hashtag, like, @, and subscribe all you want!

Day 99!

Hey guys, a quick check in here. Tomorrow is day 100 for my blog.

March is the month we shut down in Vegas (and all around the world), so I've been a bit reflective, optimisitc and yet somber to say the least. It is a rollercoaster, but, I'm so grateful for the good in my life.

I'm working on a newsletter and a plan to move forward with this thing! Please stay tuned and thanks for reading.

by Tyler Williams

Vinnie Colaiuta On Chick Corea

Vinnie Colaiuta recently gave a beautiful tribute to the great Chick Corea on his podcast, "Breakfast With Vinnie." I somehow found it on YouTube during my incessant watching of Chick "playing live" videos ever since his unexpected passing February 9, 2021.

I listened to Vinnie's podcast episode twice yesterday. After the second listen and reflection, I had a bit of a breakdown and immediately realized I wouldn't be where I am at without Chick's music and influence. Chick's "never ending process" was truly unique and inspiring, to say the least.

Thank you for putting this podcast out there Vinnie, your playing has always been amazing to me and now your recently discovered words can encapsulate how many of us must be feeling during this strange time.

Cheers,
Tyler

By the way, Vinnie played drums for Chick quite a bit, and is an outstanding musician! Please check out his website here.

TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65618142021-02-28T09:00:00-08:002021-03-01T09:57:09-08:00My Sister, Anna
February 28, 2021

by Tyler Williams

My Sister, Anna

So yesterday I received an email from the Calapooia Art Gallery, which is located in Albany, Oregon.

My sister is one of the featured artists this month, yay! (March 2021)

Please check out her work here. She is amazing and quite prolific. I'm a proud big brother, and have a few of her pieces in our house! I'm hoping she gets a website presence soon...(hint, hint Anna)

Anyway, I'm a little behind on a few blogs and podcast work, so please bare with me as I may post a few redundant yet pertinent things this week! A new format for my blog is coming! Please stay tuned...
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65617772021-02-27T09:00:00-08:002021-03-01T09:13:01-08:00Making The Sausage
February 27, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Making The Sausage

So, on Friday (2/26/2021) I finished the final 2 interviews with my band! Things went really well during the conversations this week. The content, the laughs, and the reconnecting with my wonderful Le Rêve band has been inspiring to me to keep going.

However, I had a weird thing happen with my Zoom recordings! Apparently, and I'm not even kidding, there are 3 places to change settings (and preferences) with your meetings. There are the regular preferences on the desktop app, the individual meeting preferences as you set up an invite, AND, there are a slew of preferences on the actual website for Zoom. What a fiasco! (Something my dad would say)

Now, all of this tech is really amazing, and I'm grateful we've had some sort of a way to access our family, coworkers, and friends. BUT, it is so frustrating that by unchecking one little thing on the website can derail the way the entire interview gets recorded onto my Mac! I also discovered that the recorded files went to the cloud because I changed a setting to "auto record" - somewhere? I am currently trying to focus on my audio for the podcast, and prefer separated audio as indicated as checked on the "main" preferences in the Zoom settings. It's still checked, but the auto record to the cloud won't do such a recording!

Anyway, I don't want to complain too much more about this, as I am getting some tech help via email. But, many do not care how the TV show, movie, album, etc. is really made. But, it is grueling and uninspiring to say the least at times! I also realized yesterday that I'm more annoyed that I'm not playing shows with my band and having coffee with them after our soundcheck anymore. That is much more frustrating than reading the Zoom tech help page.

Thank you for letting me rant.

Enjoy the sausage coming your way soon. (Angela, get your mind out of the gutter!)
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65597362021-02-26T12:36:13-08:002021-03-01T10:04:50-08:005 Out 6 Interviews!
February 26, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Hi guys!

Just a quick check in here. I've completed 5 out of 6 Le Rêve band interviews and I cannot wait to edit them and put them out there!

After talking to Angela Chan, I once again realized all the many connections we all have in our industry and how cool it is to be reaching out to them in this way.

I'm looking forward to releasing these interviews in the near future.

Happy Friday, and may you have a peaceful weekend.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65589562021-02-25T19:11:07-08:002021-02-25T19:11:07-08:00I Am Welcoming March
February 25, 2021

RIP - Fry's Electronics

It's kind of a sad day in the tech world.

I used to go to the Fry's near Portland, Oregon when I was getting more into computers while an undergrad in college. I loved seeing so many gadgets, electronics and the people who knew a lot about it. Plus, the prices were pretty competitive. Need a weird adapter for a USB mic? Go to Fry's!

I guess COVID and the internet have won yet another battle in the brick and mortar war. This timing isn't just about COVID, it is also about the trends of online availability for better or worse.

Anyway, thanks for the memories Fry's, and may your workers find solace soon.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65571072021-02-23T23:09:46-08:002021-02-23T23:09:46-08:00Le Rêve Band Interviews - are happening!
February 23, 2021

Le Rêve Band Interviews - are happening!

Welcome to Hear Me Blog!

I've been consistently blogging for nearly 100 days. These daily blogs are for me to build a habit. You can find them here. Please read them all, especially if you're trying to find new ways to fall asleep.

In addition to those posts, about once a week I try to share a newsletter or social media blast on a semi-regular basis, like the one you are reading now! I generally enjoy sharing these on Tuesdays. My Tuesday used to be my Friday at Le Rêve, and it kind of breaks up the week. Do you like this method? I do!

Anyway, I'm really excited to be interviewing the Le Rêve band this week for my new podcast I've been developing. Hear Me Pod - The Podcast is coming out this spring - in late March or April. Hmm...maybe I should debut it right before tax day!?

The band has been "moving on" the best they can since the closure of our show. It has been a tough road emotionally and truly seems like a bad dream that our "dream" is forever over. (Le Rêve is French for "The Dream")

However, I'm grateful that they have been hanging out with me via social media, phones and video chats. And, that they have all agreed to be some of the first guests on my new upcoming podcast!

So, please stay in touch and respond to this newsletter via my contact form or a private message and I will respond whenever I can. Hang in there and keep on keepin' on!

Best,

Tyler

P.S. Thank you for reading and thank you for supporting me here. I don't know exactly where this blog is going after the 100 days. My self expectation is that it will become a weekly thing/blog/newsletter with links to a podcast and a few other things I'm finding valuable.

by Tyler Williams

I've just set up interview times with my Le Rêve band!

We are all meeting up later this week via Zoom and I will then eventually feature them on my upcoming blog and podcast!

The band and I met on Saturday to discuss some basic things we've all been up to as of late.

It's so hard to believe it's been almost a year since we've played a Le Rêve show. Wow.

Anyway, we are all carrying on in one way or another...it has been tough, but I'm grateful we are all still such good friends and respect each other so much. It's really quite magical.

Stay tuned for more information about the new podcast and blog updates.

Dena has been in good spirits all day today.

We even got to have a nice dinner out tonight to celebrate life for life's sake.

She's been my rock this past year (and years before) and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Happy birthday to my wonderful mother!

I love you, mom. This blog is dedicated to you! Without you, I couldn't have done it.

by Tyler Williams

I've been fortunate to have been involved in a few music/creative things over the past COVID months. Some have been performances for charity or non-profits. Others have been for video or audio production.

The hardest part about small projects is that they end, and I get a little blue the next day. But, we keep on keeping on, right?

This is from a recent movie shoot I was on a couple weeks ago. Details coming!

by Tyler Williams

The Power of Words

I'm currently reworking my subtitle to my blog and upcoming podcast.

It has been an interesting process to analyze the perception words carry. My lovely wife has been nothing but supportive in my work/process and we both appreciate things that can be improved...

Today I'm a bit hung up on the word "technology" in the subtitle of my description. What does the word "technology" mean to you? To many folks (I've been in recent contact with), it seems to mean high tech trends in the industry. Or even the "most" developed tech available. Regardless, it can be a loaded word and I'm maybe misusing it a bit.

Here is a definition from my computer's dictionary. Technology: the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.

To me, my definition of technology really relates to the "tools of the trade" we are talking about or working with.

Without naming names, I can think of two different guitarists I've worked with. One really loves new technology, apps, etc. and the other loves his pencil and paper. Both systems seem to work great for them, and I think it's interesting to hear about either method to their madness.

Anyway, a new subtitle is in the works! Thanks for reading!

-Tyler

by Tyler Williams

I hate to get a little political or cynical today, but man, the U.S. is in rough shape!

My heart truly breaks for the millions without power right now in the central parts of the U.S., mainly Texas who was anything but prepared for the recent crazy weather. Now, instead of houses getting warmer, the finger pointing will get more heated. I truly wish we just had more of a united country that would trade weapons of destruction into heaters and food for those in need. Is this too much to ask?

Is the angry person with 20 guns gonna save their family from freezing? Or is the armchair, lonely hating critic with an active Twitter rant helping us solve anything? Maybe my blog isn't doing much for anyone either. I get it. I did look at the American Red Cross website for a few minutes to try to feel better...

Anyway, if anything, this past year is just further exposing our weaknesses as a nation and society. I love many things about the U.S., but, if we can't come together as a nation sooner than later, we will become further divided on every level. Our infrastructure and cohesiveness is being stretched to the absolute limits.

I truly hope those in need get what they can as soon as possible. If you want to help, please click here for more information.

TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65503132021-02-16T06:00:00-08:002021-02-16T14:11:32-08:00Tuesday Take - Don't Give Up
February 16, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Tuesday Take - Don't Give Up

I'm currently enjoying the work I'm doing at The Podcasting Workshop (Akimbo). For better or worse, they tell us (the students) it's okay to be a little bit behind. I'm happy to say, my recent falling behind just makes me want to catch up in a really good way.

Next week I will be conducting a couple of interviews for the upcoming podcast project. I'll be reaching out to my beloved Le Rêve band and a few friends! Yes, the theme of my new podcast will still be based on music, tech and possibly the most important part, intentionality.

I'm pretty excited to bring this podcast to you sometime this spring! I have no idea where I'm heading with it, I just know that I need to see it through for a while and not give up.

Unpredictability is always all around us. The entire past year has been bizarre and tomorrow could be better or worse. Without trying to sound cliché, we can only control our reaction to the things that land in our lap.

On that note, I'm going to clean off my desk and get back at it this afternoon!

In the meantime, please enjoy one of my favorite versions of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" featuring Pink and John Legend.

How Did I Miss This?

So, on a semi-daily quest for "something new" to listen to, I stumbled across this gem on Spotify this morning.

Not Our First Goat Rodeo

Please, listen to this great little interview with Yo-Yo Ma on NPR discussing this follow up album to the Goat Rodeo Sessions.

Like most jazz musicians I know, I’m very upset about Chick Corea's sudden passing.

I am deeply humbled and grateful for his wonderful contributions to our world.

by Tyler Williams

A Miserable Podcast Sample

As a part of my "Podcasting Workshop" I had to submit an audio sample of me reading from something.

I chose an excerpt from the book - "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. (p. 68 - How To Be Miserable)

This is such a great book. It was given to me many years ago by my good friend and guitarist, Mundo Juillerat. The book is all about the self sabotaging artists tend to do, instead of nourishing their craft. It is a collection of short mantras that can inspire at any moment.

Anyway, here's my sample using my iPhone and a pretty good Shure microphone attached.

Enjoy your Friday!

by Tyler Williams

I had a few basic ways to respond to this "not so great" double parking technique.

1. Get mad, try to report it as there were no other parking options in this particular garage.

2. Leave a note on the car saying something like - "Nice parking a**hole!"

Or...

3. Try to fit my car in the spot anyway...and then continue to enjoy my last night of a wonderful Utah getaway.

I took the high road and found the challenge to be quite amusing. :)

by Tyler Williams

No news is sometimes good news!

This is sort of a funny post to put out there, but I've been enjoying not reading or watching the news the past few days. I actually usually like reading about current events to stay informed. However, lately I don't feel like I'm missing out. There's no FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) going on here.

I really didn't do this consciously. I just sort of stopped opening the NY times app every morning, or checking my normal "news" podcasts.

It has been a great practice and I can highly recommend it!

Here are four reasons to try it out yourself.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65431222021-02-08T01:00:00-08:002021-02-08T15:58:40-08:00Podcasting Workshop
February 08, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Hello friends...

I'm currently working on a 7-week podcasting workshop. It's pretty neat and very involved with a community of fellow aspiring podcasters.

My podcast will be an extension of this blog, but will include interviews and further discussion of music and technology.

I'm pretty damn excited about it! But, it's also a bit daunting. I'll be honest, there's a lot to learn, and it won't likely make any money for quite a while. That's okay because I want to build something with great intention.

Anyway, I hope to update you with my progress at least once a week. For now, I'm behind on my "description" assignment and my first "vocal check." Thanks, and stay tuned!

by Tyler Williams

Putting myself out here on this blog has been a good self-challenge to say the least. In many ways, the writing and the uploading are the easy parts. The difficulty stems from wondering who might actually read the damn posts.

Who cares?

You don't have to read it. You can move on. I'm doing this for me! But, if you enjoy it...like, subscribe and share it immediately!

I'm doing this for me to help build the habit. Today is blog 76 out of 100 (for my 100 day goal).

Thanks for reading and I shall not care if you did not read this. I mean that with intention and love!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65415942021-02-06T15:04:01-08:002021-02-06T15:04:01-08:00Better Than Graffiti
February 06, 2021

Better Than Graffiti

Good afternoon!

Today I went on a short walk in my neighborhood and found this clever take on fence painting.

In some areas near downtown Las Vegas, there can be a lot of graffiti. This house was a bit different...

It made me smile, and I hope it makes you smile as well.

by Tyler Williams

Last night I spent some quality time with a very good musician friend of mine who hasn't been working (like most of us) since the f-ing pandemic. It was great to share some adult beverages and our love of music. Some of which happened to be playing throughout the wide open, outdoor and yes...socially distanced bar.

Tony Richards is a wonderful friend, musician and outdoor enthusiast. We even hiked the Mt. Charleston peak together 2 times last fall! He also just happens to play bass and produce the Australian Bee Gees Show.

Much of the overheard music last night was from the 1960's: Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, etc... Wonderfully arranged, timeless, raw, non-pitch corrected, non-quantized and not overly edited music.

Two particular tunes that really stand out to me today are "Layla" (Derek & The Dominos) and "Good Vibrations" (The Beach Boys). Both of these tunes have wonderful sections that are almost like a song within a song. These full versions weren't always so welcomed to radio at first, due to their song length. Most "hit" songs of the 60's were an average of 2:30 to 3:00.

Good Vibrations

Spotify

Apple Music

YouTube

Layla

Spotify

Apple Music

YouTube

Anyway, these tunes amazed me 30+ years ago and still do today. Just listen with some headphones and enjoy! I'd even suggest you tap your hand to the rhythm and notice the dramatic tempo change each tune has.

Tony's Australian Bee Gees show is slated to come back to the Excaliber soon. Please support the show and check him out here.

Have a nice weekend!

by Tyler Williams

Resistance Does Not Care

I'm loosely paraphrasing Steven Pressfield's wonderful book "The War of Art."

This morning I decided to start re-reading this great book, as I couldn't seem to sleep in past 5am! The restlessness is good and I feel lucky to be able to enjoy it today!

Dena and I just finished a big 30 day of decluttering (more coverage on this soon). Yesterday I also had to return a few "dog care items" to a few stores. The deadline for return was fast approaching and I didn't really want to do it last night, but then again, I just needed to rip off the proverbial adhesive strip.

In Steven's book, page 12, he says "...the more important a call or action is to our soul's evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it."

Now, I'm not saying returning a few items to a store is that great of an accomplishment, but it has given me some clarity for the things I do want to accomplish in the next weeks ahead.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65389062021-02-03T15:24:30-08:002021-02-03T15:24:30-08:00Hiking Pics
February 03, 2021

by Tyler Williams

I just listened to a great podcast this morning by Seth Godin about littering.

It is interesting how many systems we have that contribute to littering in our world. Single use items, fast food, cigarettes, homelessness and the excessive "consumption" in general.

The overall consensus in Seth's podcast is that our single use and fast food industry is behind such campaigns as "Don't Be A Litterbug." Seth notes that the industry itself is a big part of the problem.

Maybe just using one really nice water bottle is better than recycling all the time to try to feel good about the recycling fiasco. Just a personal thought...

By the way, I'm not against recycling. It's just that the industry is perpetuating the constant "need" to recycle, because we have too much crap in the first place!

Anyway, have a nice Tuesday and I'll see ya tomorrow!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65366922021-02-01T15:39:56-08:002021-02-01T15:39:56-08:00New Month, New Workshop
February 01, 2021

New Month, New Workshop

So...I decided to sign up for a podcasting workshop. It is basically an online process/guide with fellow newbee podcasters out there trying to set something up for the first time.

It is a 7-week intensive workshop. I'm gong to be blogging about some of the process. I will continue the regular posts about music and technology as well!

I'm grateful to all of you who read this and help me with the various ideas moving things forward.

On that note. I'll check in with you tomorrow!

P.S. If you are looking for Dena's wonderful blog on our rescue dog. It is here!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65357652021-01-31T12:15:54-08:002021-01-31T16:16:04-08:00Update on Little Trixie~ (by Dena)
January 31, 2021

Today I wanted to share a well written description about our rescue dog we have been taking care of for the past 6 weeks. I once blogged about a dog we had found in our neighborhood and eventually found its owners. This is not that dog! Please enjoy this guest blog from my wife.

Update on Little Trixie~

by Dena Massaro-Williams

We really did try our absolute best. I guess I can only say we didn’t try our absolute “longest.” But in a sense, we did that also. If having more patience and making more of an effort for her means continued feelings of anxiety and discord between us much of the time, then I’ve run out of patience.

Yes, we’ve tried all the things. Tyler sitting, even lying on the floor and slowly scooting over to her, speaking softly with a raised pitch, treats, treats, more treats. Buying a couple extra beds for her, switching and moving crates, singing to her, ignoring her, looking at her, not looking at her, not wearing hats, Tyler even taking off his watch before moving his hand toward her, attempting to hand-feed her, sitting on the living room floor (while watching rescue dog documentaries), bringing our neighbor’s dog over, reading countless articles and watching videos, consulting with all of our dog-owner friends, reaching out to my vet, etc.,.

I think that because Trixie is barely starting to grow a tiny bit more comfortable with me (meaning she’ll come up to me to sniff but I can’t move or she’ll jump away) she is actually becoming MUCH worse with Tyler. Even if he goes near her to give her a high-value treat, like turkey or cheese, she squeezes herself into the corner. She has also started growling at him the past few weeks. She was so desperate to get away from him two nights ago that she rammed herself BEHIND the beer fridge. We had to unplug it and pull it away to get her out. We’ve moved the crate so we are able to let her run out the back sliding door when she needs to potty. Most of the time when Tyler goes to let her out, she bolts out so fast she hurts herself and sometimes poops on the way out. And she’s so afraid to run through the door threshold (in OR out) with both of us, she often runs headfirst into the door if we don’t open it fast enough. This is all in her desperate attempt to get as far away from us as fast as she can. It’s heartbreaking to see her hurting herself this way. And frustrating and discouraging beyond belief. When Tyler does have to pick her up in the corner by the beer fridge to bring her outside, she growls and then defecates on him. I’ve lost count how many times that’s happened now.

I had a trainer come to the house last week. She was so nice and helpful in a validating kind of way, but she didn’t even charge us because she said she “didn’t do anything.” We’re not looking to train Trixie to perform anything on command, we just want her to trust us a tiny bit. It was 6 weeks yesterday since we got her and I still can’t even get close to petting her unless she’s cornered. Finally yesterday I called the rescue organization we adopted her from. The woman put me in touch with *Bob (not actual name), the dog behaviorist they work with, and I spoke pretty extensively with him last night. He was very supportive and definitely agrees she needs help. He said he never would have placed a dog like her in a home with two people who have basically no experience (other than Tyler’s childhood dogs). He also told me hoarder dogs have entirely unique problems and can be extremely difficult to rehabilitate. I don’t think she’s comfortable with ANY humans, although when our neighbor brought her little dog over, they did fine together. Tyler even considered trying to get another dog to help her, but we also realize what a huge gamble that may be.

Bob wants us to bring her to him this afternoon. I asked if I should just plan on leaving her with him indefinitely and he said yes. He said it’ll take at least a couple weeks to assess where she’s really at. He’s confident he can help her, but doesn’t think she’s a good fit for us. He did encourage us to try again if & when we’re ready, but with a different dog. He can recommend dogs who would love to hike and camp with us, and we could actually take overnight trips to dog-friendly places. Early on, I felt selfish for worrying that all of these things may never be possible with a dog like Trixie, but Bob assured me it’s not selfish and this situation isn’t good for ANY of us. This has been a HUGE learning experience, and now I know I will do MUCH more research about any animal we would adopt in the future.

My heart is broken, but I’m also feeling a huge sense of relief. It’s gotten really tense around here with Tyler trying to tiptoe around and do all the things I’m reading about and telling him to try. I hate how consuming it’s become, especially because she’s not getting better with us. No bond has been formed on any end. In our quieter moments when it’s just me at home, she’ll come out of the crate and walk all around the house, sniffing things and looking curious. It’s adorable, even though I can’t touch her. So I DO think she could work out in maybe a single-owner household, perhaps a female with other dogs to bring her out of her shell. I’m so appreciative for all the support we’ve gotten from our friends and family who know about our journey. I’ve felt wracked with guilt and wondered why I can’t seem to make it work or just drum up more patience and assume this could go on for a very long time. We’re both exhausted from trying though, and I guess I can look at it like we’ve provided a place for her to stay for 6 weeks. We’ve basically been her foster home for now. I’m really glad I told the woman from the organization about all of the problems we’ve had. I kind of just barfed it all out because I was at my wit’s end after the beer fridge incident. I’m afraid if I didn’t go into all the details, she would’ve just said to bring Trixie back and then they’d try to foster and adopt her out again without seeing Bob. Now at least they’ll have a much better sense of what she needs to be successful and will hopefully avoid more returns in the future. I know for a fact she will not end up in a kill shelter or just be euthanized, so that also helped us make this very difficult decision.

Anyway, congratulations and THANK YOU if you’ve made it to this point!!! Sorry this is so long. I suppose it doubles as a journal entry & part of my own therapy 🤪. We will bring her to Bob at 1pm today, and I’m sure I will cry about it again. But I’m glad to know she’s on the right path now.

by Tyler Williams

50 Ways To Love Music

What is your favorite song and why?

Do you come back to it often?

Do you listen to it when you're happy?

Do you listen to it when you're sad?

One of my favorite songs is the arrangement of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" by Brad Mehldau.

The melody doesn't even arrive until about the 4:19 mark. Much like life. We don't always get what we want right away.

I hope you like this arrangement as well.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65314722021-01-26T20:00:04-08:002021-01-26T20:00:04-08:00Bass Player Power Outage
January 26, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Bass Player Power Outage

Yesterday I wanted to host a Las Vegas Bass Players hang via Zoom. I used social media to get my invite out.

Unfortunately, we had a power outage for about 6 hours. I had to cancel the meeting due to no power and my insufficient cell/data coverage. We've had some rain, snow and winds throughout the Las Vegas area, so it's been a bit of a challenge for the utility workers. A first world inconvenience magnified by the pandemic and social isolation.

Anyway, I was bummed to cancel the hang on such short notice (about 30 minutes prior to start time), but I have been grateful to get the feedback and support from my fellow bass player friends. I have had numerous friends asking how we were doing. And my bass playing peers are anxiously awaiting a re-schedule.

Dena and I are just fine and I am touched by our concerned friends. Wow. Thanks!

I've had a real love/hate with social media the past few years. It's often such a self serving format full of bragging B.S. and political disarray. I've both participated in and ignored such rabbit holes. I also tend to find cool stuff to see and do by using social media. It is the most immediate way to find and share things.

I like seeing my friends moving on with their lives through social media during this crisis of a year. However, as I've read before, scrolling is the new smoking.

Yesterday, I further "accepted" that we are all just using social media in our own ways, for our own needs. Some can't get off of it, some might think it is our ultimate demise as human beings... You can leave it and nobody cares. You can be on it all the time and nobody cares.

Anyway you work with it, you need to be self aware of it. To be able to take it and to leave it.

Have a great remainder of the week. On or offline!

Cheers,

Tyler

by Tyler Williams

Monday Morning (lack of) Madness

Intentionality

I think the biggest change we have all felt during the last 9 months of the quarantine is this overall sense of having to slow down.

Don't get me wrong, I generally like a face paced life. I like getting a lot done and moving around. But, with the current state of life - we all have to do things at a slower pace. Maybe that's okay. Maybe this will be the new "way" for a while.

My friend Suj recently posted a blog about mindfulness with food. The basic concept of taking more time with eating and thinking about the things we take in. It is pretty spot on.

I guess if you can, enjoy the calmer pace of this Monday. And take the time to savor your food instead of just treating as a fuel for fast pace.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65295392021-01-24T19:50:53-08:002021-01-24T19:52:57-08:00Day 24 of 30
January 24, 2021

Things are getting tough, but we are plugging away! Some of the harder items to declutter are the memorabilia. Pictures, old student ID's, etc...

I've actually recently uncovered a bunch of old Hot Wheels cars for some reason! Granted. I love the look of many of these cars, but, it's time to let them go to a better home soon. Plus, my wife won't let me buy a new race track for them. I jest.

Sometimes, you just need to keep doing it to do it.

Here's to the final week of January, 2021. Make it hot!

by Tyler Williams

A New Carrot

I'm trying a new (yet old) approach to my music practice. I'm playing a few things on my bass in the morning before I eat. A cup of coffee and a bass.

Sounds easy enough, right?

This means I shouldn't be doing the following "things" first thing:
- Checking social media
- Reading the news
- Eating donuts, unless I've practiced, of course

I've been throwing this idea around for a while now. But. I need a new carrot this year. I need an incentive (carrot) to get out of bed.

I have to persuade my musical muscles on a regular, more consistent method. Also, I'm not trying to neglect my health. I just want to have something to look forward to during a nice musical warm up!

Do you have a carrot reward system? A reason to help you do what you do?

Now. It's time for a proper breakfast. Maybe something with vegetables?

by Tyler Williams

An Email About Email

Hi guys! So, last night Dena and I worked on tackling some of her abundance of excess email. She had over 20,000 unread messages! We were able to knock out and delete almost 5,000 in just a short few minutes. The first step is just acknowledging the bulk.

How do you like to deal with email? Do you ever think about achieving inbox zero?

I'll be working on some tutorials to share some tips on email management that I've acquired over the years. Email is constantly interrupting our lives, but we also depend on it for so many things throughout our daily routines...

There are a few easy ways to try to save a little time and headache when dealing with a lot of the excess and junk.

I'm trying to compile a few thoughts on this never ending task. Here's a quick survey for you...

1. What do you hate the most about dealing with email?

2. How often do you check your email?

3. Do you prefer using social media for professional communication? Or, email or other apps? Pigeon carrier? U.S. Postal Services?

4. What is better, a phone call or an email?

5. How long does it take to burn a laptop to complete annihilation? Just seeing if you're still reading this...

I'm working on some tutorials and wanted to see if anyone had any "email" issues they wanted to address. I'm working with a few different systems, and would love to share them throughout this blog in the near future!

Please let me know by responding to this newsletter/blog.

Thanks!

Email Decluttering And NAMM

Hi guys,

So tonight Dena and I started tackling her almost 20,000 unread email messages! In a pretty short period of time, we were able to eliminate nearly 5,000 messages!

She is not so tech savvy, but was thrilled with the ease of a pretty seamless process. Stay tuned for some details and hacks we want to share with you! Also, throughout the week, I'd like to share some other tips on general email management.

And, I will be covering some of the online only events at NAMM! (National Association of Music Manufacturers)

Have a great night!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65236762021-01-17T18:18:47-08:002021-01-17T18:18:47-08:00Happy Sunday.
January 17, 2021

Day 16 of 30 Days

Yesterday I filled my car with donations. It felt pretty darn good.

Today is day 16 of the challenge and it's going well! It is hard work to part with certain things, but, I'm finding it to be very rewarding (per usual) once the item is out of site.

I guess discarding an old broken cigar cutter was easier than I thought!

This is just a quick check in to show off my haul away yesterday! More info on selling, donating and decluttering is on the way. I have discovered many ways to deal with the sell or donate debacle and I'm looking forward to discussing it further!

by Tyler Williams

CES - 2021 Final Thoughts

One of my favorite things about CES is the common appreciation of techonology from the past. Realizing that we've come a long way is hard to appreciate when there's a new phone or computer coming out every few months. Sometimes the leaps in features can be daunting.

It is sometimes nice to reminisce about the large, yet slow computers, the early digital music players (the original iPod) and the occasional nod to early digital cameras. Yet, we all still love analog features in film and audio. It is also slightly remarkable, yet ironic to see things emulating the past with software. Think of the early Instagram filtering.

The beloved Canon PowerShot 600 from 1996 even got a quick shout out. The original price was about $1200. With inflation, this thing would be around $2000 today. Wow! That's a lot for 1 MB (megabyte) of built in storage. Your average phone probably has about 64GB (gigabytes) of storage, which is, 64,000 MB's.

Some blasts from the past for you...

- Further history of digital cameras can be found here.

- Also, a few years ago Stephen Hackett produced a nice little video about the history of the of the iPod Classic.

The concept of having lower costs for the consumer is probably always considered a "breakthrough" when it comes to CES. It's smaller, lighter, faster and ultimately you are getting more bang for your buck - this year compared to last. That's comforting yet discouraging at the same time. Every time you purchase a piece of tech, it is often quickly outdated by a future, more affordable thing.

Overall, CES had an underlying spirit of hope regarding the pandemic and how we're all in this "socially distanced life" together. We are all using our tech to the best of our abilities. And, the online meetings are annoying but somehow better than nothing. There's comfort in knowing you're not alone. Even if you have to force yourself to see that for what it is.

Have a great weekend!

Peace,

Tyler

P.S. Here's a link to the best of CES 2021 according to CNET.

by Tyler Williams

CES - Day 4

Today is the "final" day of CES 2021 and most of the live coverage ended by 2:31AM (PST).

Luckily, all attendees get full access to the video replays for a few more weeks. Needless to say, most speakers missed being in person and I think next year will just be even better, with much anticipation and hope. People like to be around other people! Period.

I'll be watching a few replays today/tonight and should have a nice "takeaway" in tomorrow's blog and newsletter.

A big advantage to an all digital conference was not bringing home a bunch of useless swag and paperwork! This is especially good because we are currently on Day 14 of the 30 Day Minimalism game.

The game is definitely getting more challenging, but Dena and I are still going!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65200332021-01-13T13:03:38-08:002021-01-13T13:03:38-08:00CES - Day 3
January 13, 2021

by Tyler Williams

CES - Day 3

Today seems to be more of the same...overall. I'm mainly noticing people discussing the growing tech world, due to the pandemic itself. Home office furniture, cloud services and tech/devices has only grown since the last CES conference. Businesses that have embraced the tech and urgency to change are doing just fine.

Business real estate is more abundant and will probably will become repurposed for other needs. Flex time and working from home is going to continue as well.

In many ways, all of this "forced change" is just so extraordinary and can lead to some innovative possibilities! Overall, I'm honestly just trying to embrace it, rather than become more discouraged by it.

On Friday, I will be mailing out my regular newsletter with a summary of 2021 CES!

Now, go wash your hands, clean your screens and wear a damn mask!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65194422021-01-12T20:06:12-08:002021-01-12T20:06:12-08:00CES - Day 2
January 12, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Good evening!

CES - Day 2

I was able to attend a couple webinars today via the CES website.

Today's short takeaway is that the future will never be like our more recent past...

By using online shopping, online communication and online everything - there will be less and less desire to go back to the way things were.

No one is surprised by this phenomenon, but it is still hard to accept the forced reality we all face.

Authenticity is what will make or break companies moving forward. People are caring more than ever about associations with the environment, politics and ethics. For better or for worse.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65183162021-01-11T12:54:22-08:002021-01-12T20:07:08-08:00CES - Day 1
January 11, 2021

CES - Day 1(Prepping)

by Tyler Williams

So far I've updated my profile, signed up for a few sessions to attend and have been outlining things to cover as a musician interested in tech.

I'll admit it, I'm not too excited about <a contents="$30,000 8k, 88" TV's" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-oled88zxpua-signature-oled-8k-tv">$30,000 8k, 88" TV's, however, I do want to find some cool things to discover. I'm ALWAYS amused at how many companies get into the headphone business.

The actual keynote is at 3:30pm (PST) today. I'll be checking in on some social media and will report back soon!

TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65176172021-01-10T12:07:51-08:002021-01-10T12:07:51-08:00Sunday Tech Thoughts
January 10, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Good afternoon!

Tomorrow CES begins...all online.

Today I'll be outlining things to cover, from a musicians perspective. Sounds like fun during a pandemic, right? Believe me, I'd much rather be playing a gig with real instruments, in real time. But...

Remember when Apple's iTunes took over the CD sales world? A lot of musicians (including myself) fought the movement. Now, we all have to stream stuff to stay relevant. The CD's are gone, and so are the gigs (thanks to the pandemic). The old saying, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" is all too real these days.

Please let me know what value you have in your tech! What is a favorite app you use? What is a favorite piece of gear you use for practicing or for gigs? Or...for online work? Are you able to adjust to using more tech to get your music out there? Are you collaborating?

A few of my musician friends really like using their tablets for reading and performing. I have been throwing around ideas to help musicians with their tech and how to get the most of out of our gear. How about a bit of an online class or some sort of a coaching service? Would you be interested in this sort of thing?

Let's stay in touch!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65171962021-01-09T12:12:14-08:002021-01-09T12:13:15-08:00Falling Behind On The Game.
January 09, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Today I'm behind on the minimalism game. It's okay. I need to declutter 8 items from yesterday and then 9 today to "catch up."

17 items in one day! It can be done, and it will be done.

One of the minimalist bloggers I follow has a few tips for decluttering. Her name is Courtney Carver and she has a great resource for help you find stuff to declutter when you might be feeling stuck.

See you tomorrow!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65164452021-01-08T12:00:00-08:002021-01-08T12:00:08-08:00The How Versus The Do
January 08, 2021

by Tyler Williams

I often get hung up on the process of "how" to do the work, before I actually "do" the work. I love learning better ways to do a task, but some things might not need much further analysis. What is the most efficient way to make a PBJ sandwich? My wife would do a full cleaning of the kitchen first, then put away all the dishes. Her next step would be to find some bread.

This blog process/analysis creation took me through many months of fiddling around with different apps, platforms and layouts. As you can see, it is pretty basic, but it works for me.

I once had an idea to just write the damn blog on a napkin and post that writing on Instagram! In a way, that would be pretty cool actually and might be fun for a few days or a month. The idea is mine, and I need to develop it further! I probably need new cameras and lighting to make it all work out. Lol.

It's now time to research the best peanut butter and jelly combinations for a few hours. Then, lunch time!

TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65157742021-01-07T12:26:43-08:002021-01-07T12:26:43-08:00Telling The Truth
January 07, 2021

Senator Mitt Romney was a class act last night, regarding the certification of our election.

This short segment was one of the best responses to the b.s. endured on our nation yesterday.

I'm not going to be making this blog about politics, but today is the darkest I've ever felt about the divide in our nation. The feeling of uncertainty is comparable to 9/11.

I'm completely worried about our democracy and the perception we have internationally and among ourselves.

All we can do is hope and work for the best. And, maybe, just maybe, the truth is important.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65148072021-01-06T12:05:00-08:002021-01-08T09:24:53-08:00Putting Down The Phone
January 06, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Just a quick mid-week check in.

I actually just saw a recreational park worker get lectured for being on his phone while working.

It was uncomfortable, but needed to be said, apparently.

I'm ready to put my phone down more often as well. Even if no one is telling me too!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65141922021-01-05T12:59:56-08:002021-01-05T12:59:56-08:002021 Music and Tech Coverage
January 05, 2021

I want to share some of the ways people are dealing with their music and technology these days. The ups, the downs and the WTFs we are even doing with it all.

This coverage will be for musicians, listeners, tech lovers and tech haters!

Please send me any thoughts by responding to this email/newsletter (or a private message) and I will respond as soon as I can.

Take care and have a great week.

by Tyler Williams

Yesterday, Dena I started a new round of the 30 day minimalism game to deal with some of the clutter.

After putting away holiday decorations last night we decided to give it another shot! (We had played it before, in May 2018)

It sounds easy, right? 30 items total? Nope, it's actually quite a bit more challenging than it may seem.

The Rules:
Basically you get rid of 1 item on day one, then 2 items on day two, 3 items on day 3, etc...

By the end of 30 days, you will have decluttered up to 465 items!

I suggest you try it out.

Happy decluttering!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65128312021-01-03T12:38:15-08:002021-01-03T12:41:33-08:00The Food Is Appreciated
January 03, 2021

by Tyler Williams

Today I'm just doing a quick check in.

My wife made a wonderful spinach and feta scramble for breakfast. We used name our Sundays together "Sunday Funday!" Now, it seems every day is some sort of a Funday/lack of a real schedule - especially as unemployed musicians...

The food was so appreciated. The time to savor it. The time to talk and enjoy it for what it is.

This pandemic has made us all slow down a bit. The hardest part is just doing the same basic things. The best part is enjoying the basics for what they are!

Yes honey, I'm now going to do the dishes.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65122202021-01-02T11:44:04-08:002021-01-02T11:44:04-08:00Less Is Now Available
January 02, 2021

I'm looking forward to watching "The Minimalists: Less Is Now" by Matt D'Avella.

This is a "follow up" documentary to "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things" and it just dropped on Netflix yesterday.

The film features Joshua and Ryan (founders of The Minimalists), who have influenced millions to consider a more intentional life. Their message and format are the primary reason I got into blogging.

They are not paying me to share this. They just have great things worth sharing!

I plan to review the film within the next few days.

by Tyler Williams

Good afternoon,

I'm currently on day 38 of my 100-day blogging promise to myself. Seth Godin actually claims that the first 1000 days are the most difficult. Of course they are! So are the first 38!

On an interview with The Futur, Seth recommends that any blogger should try at least 100 consecutive days. Most "habit" experts suggest 3 months or 90 days to try to break or make a habit. I think my mom even has a quote on her fridge that says, "Habit is overcome by habit." (Thomas à Kempis)

Godin is however a true master and deserves the recognition he has earned. Only three more years for me to get to the 1000th blog! Ha!

It's been an interesting journey and I'm proud to keep it going. I'm also eternally grateful to my friends and family who have checked it out and given me some feedback.

Now, go start a good habit in 2021!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65104482020-12-30T14:04:23-08:002020-12-30T14:04:23-08:00I Want To Review Your Music
December 30, 2020

Good afternoon,

Well, this year is ending soon and most of us are relieved that the yearly digits will soon change from 2020 to 2021. I'm not sure if January 1 will be much different from December 31 as far as a brighter worldly outlook, but, I can appreciate the optimism for the numbers moving on. 2020 has been nothing much more than the proverbial dumpster fire.

On a positive note, some pretty cool music has come my way throughout the pandemic months. Some of the songs have just gotten me through a day or evening, just because.

Here are three vastly different instrumental favorites (with links) I've listened to in 2020.
(I have no affiliation with Spotify or YouTube, by the way)

- Silence Is Golden (Lettuce) - A great tune by a great funk band. I've been listening to these guys for years and this tune just makes me smile.

- Spotify

- YouTube

- Olympus Mons (Rick Wakeman) - What can I say. This guy is a legend! Dena thinks (and is probably right) I have a man crush on him. His instrumental music always makes me smile. This song dedicated to the Mars volcano is no exception.

- Spotify

- YouTube

- The Moon's A Harsh Mistress (Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden) - One of my all-time favorite versions of this tune, by songwriter Jimmy Webb. Step outside, and enjoy the sky with this one.

- Spotify

- YouTube

Please share with me any interesting music that has been getting you through this pandemic as well. I humbly challenge you to pick 3 "vastly different" tunes and send them to me!

By the way, tonight is a full moon. The last one for 2020!

Cheers,

Tyler

by Tyler Williams

Today I want to encourage respect for instructional manuals.

When learning about something we don't understand, most of us just watch a YouTube video to quickly learn how use it. We all do it! Many manufacturers even encourage you to scan a code on the new "thing" to watch the "how to video." Never mind the best way to use the "thing."

Many of us learn about the "thing" and then get better with experience. I'm finding that this only works up to a point for me. When a program I've been using suddenly updates or I lose some default settings, I get pretty annoyed at having to spend time with the learning process when I really just want to get back to the creating.

Last night this very thing happened to me when using Logic (Apple - DAW) and my Apollo Twin (UAD) interface. With a recent Logic update, some of the default settings needed to be reset. Once I understood this, it turned out to be a quick process. However, it took me a while to finally get there. After fixing a few system preferences and audio settings in Logic, I was up and running, but my own internal frustration lingered.

Using two or more software programs at the same time can be helpful yet frustrating! Knowing the ins and outs of both is imperative and worth the time for the long haul. I've decided to renew my respect for the instructional manual. I need more information in my back pocket before the updates unravel the previous work.

Some of this newfound respect to the manual stems from an interview I heard on the Scoring Notes podcast with the wonderful copyist, Emily Grishman.

Reading your software manual is also a great way to fall asleep at night!

by Tyler Williams

The Day After X-Mas

Today feels kind of blue.

Yesterday we had a fun Zoom chat with the family. I got to see my smiling nieces and nephew on the call. I felt close to the people I love, even though we were many miles apart.

Today is harder. I wanted to be home more than ever this year, but with COVID we all understand that it is simply just safer to stay home.

So many other families have it so bad right now.

- The families who can't afford to own a device that helps them communicate over the internet.
- The families who have lost jobs due to the pandemic.
- The families ripped apart by the pandemic.
- The families ripped apart by the politics.
- The families who have lost loved ones.
- The families going through so much more pain, that it's easier to just go about my day instead donating or helping out in some way.

I guess being sad the day after a "nice" Christmas is not very practical. But, I am a little blue...
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65077172020-12-25T12:00:00-08:002020-12-25T12:00:08-08:00Merry Christmas!
December 25, 2020

A few months ago Dena and I recorded a cool tune with some amazing musicians from the Las Vegas area. Carlos Lopez wrote the piece and it was recently used to help promote "Hope For The City," a nonprofit organization passionately committed to providing care, relief, and meeting the critical food needs of people living in the greater Las Vegas area and beyond.

Carlos put together a killer band, and I'm quite proud of the result!

by Tyler Williams

I'm comparing Spotify, YouTube Music and Apple Music a bit this week. Some independent artists use Bandcamp as well, but I'm not as familiar with its platform.

I have a real love/hate relationship with streaming music platforms. It's not great for artists as far as royalties, but it seems like a "must have" to get your music out to more people.

Also, I've found some really cool artists on various "playlists" over the years.

Any music worth pursuing is usually worth the effort for the ears.

Anyway, it will be fun to do a bit of comparison to share with you! Stay tuned!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65057682020-12-22T16:15:00-08:002020-12-22T16:20:03-08:00Tuesday Take - Anne Charbonneau
December 22, 2020

by Tyler Williams

Anne Charbonneau is a wonderful keyboardist, composer and arranger. She loves music and cares deeply for our planet's survival, more than the average person. Just ask her about biodegradable dental floss - I'm serious!

I'm proud to feature her in today's newsletter and blog.

Anne and I have many mutual connections in our music world. She's played Cirque shows, broadway production shows and has worked with many artists in various capacities around the world. Recently Anne was interviewed on a video podcast featured on MoMM@Home (Museum of Making Music). The MoMM organization is a worthy non-profit music museum and serves as the face of the NAMM organization. Normally, many musicians and manufacturers would be getting ready for the 2021 NAMM conference. But, not this year...

The MMoM interview covers some of her past work and details some of her recent experience of running a band on a Cirque du Soleil show. It's pretty badass.

She has two original albums available through her website and is currently working on a new one for 2021! Anne is also working on a creative nutritional desserts recipe book, in which I have sampled many of the foods it will entail. They’re quite delicious!

Please check out Anne's website and support this great friend.

by Tyler Williams

I often think about the future of my industry as I start each blog. I'm also concerned about those (in any industry) that can't cover their needs. Our collective concerns are daunting.

As we wrap up the year, I want to focus on the music to end this wacky year.

I will be reviewing as much music as possible the next 10 days. This will also be a bit of a personal reflection on some things, but, it's also a great way to spread the work of my fellow artists and friends! I'm going to request albums to review on social media as an experiment to see what kind of response I'll get, and to just do it for my own good.

Tomorrow we begin to end the year on a "sound" note.

Oh, and we also adopted dog a couple days ago! More details on that later.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65041032020-12-20T12:00:00-08:002020-12-20T12:00:09-08:00Trios In 2020
December 20, 2020

by Tyler Williams

It's time to hit some final "year end" reviews! If you don mind, I would like to share some music I've been listening to throughout this extraordinary year!

My upcoming Tuesday newsletter(s) will soon have a final top 10 list, but I thought it would be cool to share a couple trios I have been following, throughout the pandemic. I'm including some Spotify links, but you can find them on other sites, I'm sure!

Howes3 - A jazz fusion trio out of Brighton, UK A breath of fresh air to a "new jazz" type of playlist I discovered on Spotify. Especially on a tune like Too Many Kicks.

Dirty Loops - A musician's musician trio. They are from Stockhom, Sweden. Their new album is now out, but they've been releasing songs one at a time on social media for quite some time. This was one of my favorites. Work S**t Out.

Mon chien Stupide (Bande originale du film) - This is a soundtrack by one of my absolute favorite composers. Brad Mehldau.

Enjoy, and stay tuned for more music!
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65037462020-12-19T16:55:15-08:002020-12-19T16:55:15-08:00The Hidden Brain - Pain and Joy
December 19, 2020

by Tyler Williams

https://hiddenbrain.org/podcast/minimizing-pain-maximizing-joy/

I heard a wonderful podcast yesterday on NPR's Hidden Brain. It is an interview with Shankar Vedantam and William Irvine regarding the way people deal with pain and joy.

It is one of the best discussions about stoic philosophy, that I've ever heard. In the podcast, Mr. Irvine is promoting his book "The Stoic Challenge."

In a nutshell, if we can possibly look at life as a gift, and that it can "always be worse," then we might be better off! It sounds simple, but, it's not. It takes work to learn how to live like a stoic and learn to be productively negative for our own benefit.

I will be buying this book very soon!

If you don't believe me, just look it up on some sort of device using some sort of search engine!

by Tyler Williams

This past Saturday (12/12/20) I performed some holiday music with some great friends, outside on a porch. We were socially distanced, and cheery as we could be.

After the mini "concert" with friends, I instantly had a bit of a lump in my throat. It was all for fun, but then I wondered - "now what?"

After the concert I spoke with my good friend Megan about the future of our entertainment industry. We both ultimately feel like the industry won't be what it was for a very long time. Even with a vaccine. Businesses have constantly made cuts with musicians for years. It's always cheaper to use DJs or house music instead of live music. And, technology is making it even more difficult to compete.

With conferences and trade shows being mostly online these days, it is also saving money and providing more access to more people. Recently, I've been trying to be part of the "just show up" crowd these days. But, in all honesty, it's really hard to stay consistent. I'm often burning out from all the screen time. I'm not even close to what school teacher must feel!

If we don't at least pursue the "socially distanced music" than, maybe it's just going to be "distanced music" and that might even be worse. We must try to do the best with what we have.
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/65000922020-12-15T12:54:23-08:002020-12-15T12:54:23-08:00Positively Arts - Home For The Holidays
December 15, 2020

by Tyler Williams

So on an almost daily basis, I've been trying to figure out some sort a future "self business model." Anybody else doing this? LOL

I'm enjoying the blogging and the potential to create some sort of an outlet for friends to promote what they are doing, and the things I find interesting. Yet, at the same time, I often have ideas to do something a little more tangible. Like to offer an actual physical product for sale.

This can really be a time to do whatever we can, right? Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once) I would love to see every musician friend I have in this business get ahead somehow. Musically, or with a new side hustle. Any one of us who's sacrificed so much to be the artist we've strived for, deserves it. But, the market isn't there. The audience can't be there. And, we all know it's futile to just hope for the best.

Maybe it's time to offer a new food to go service? (I'm seriously thinking about something similar)

These are the things that scare me the most - perusing "non-music" career opportunities:

- The overhead.
- The new self identity in a new business.
- The leap of faith into that identity.
- The fear of success.

Anyway, we are all questioning a lot of things these days. Life is really too short to not consider all opportunities.

by Tyler Williams

Yesterday, Thursday (12/10) I received a package a couple days earlier than expected. I was kind of surprised, because my expectations were low for the shipping date.

I'm trying to knock out a bit of X-Mas shopping, as many of us are, from the computer. This trend has of course been steadily increasing, even before COVID, so I can't even imagine the strain it has been putting on the small business community. It's completely brutal, I'm sure.

I also recently sold an old Apple watch on a website called Swappa, which is similar to Ebay. I'm going to do a blog/newsletter feature on decluttering old electronics in the future! Stay tuned.

Anyway, the policy with Swappa is that you need to ship the items within 2 business days of "purchase" by the buyer. I am fortunate to live close to a post office, and, had the time to mail it, the same day of the sale!

Needless to say, the sudden fire under my ass now motivates me to do more with the decluttering journey.

by Tyler Williams

Well, last night we connected with the owners of our little guest.

It was a difficult night, but, it also provided a sense of relief to see the neighbors reconnect with their chihuahua!

When we found the dog, she had no microchip or collar and the residents in the area did not recognize her. However, in all honesty, I always had a weird feeling and I think it would have persisted if we hadn't connected with them.

We now know that Trixie's real name is Daisy, and the owners are very grateful for our care. It truly made this difficult time a bit more human for me.

By the way, the owners even showed up with masks!

Be a good neighbor. Do the right thing. Think about how things affect everyone involved.

- Tyler

P.S. This is our cat's reaction to the dog's stay with us.

December 08, 2020

by Tyler Williams

Well, what can I say. Life is full of surprises.

Dena (my wife) and I are currently fostering a cute little chihuahua, and we aren't even sure what to do with her! So far, it's been a lot of potty training and TLC. We have no idea who the owner might be. The little pup actually found us two days ago on a busy street near our home, running towards us with genuine excitement and fear. We walked around the neighborhood for about an hour looking for its owner!

Dena has been diligently posting on the appropriate sites, to get the word out on this "found" dog. We've been calling her Trixie (in honor of Trixie Norton). She's adorable.

Anyway, back to the newsletter and blog!

by Tyler Williams

Hello, and a happy Sunday to you!

I'm adding some features to my website.

A few of you have asked me about my cd and its availability. Here are few issues...

- My distributor has stopped selling cds, a sign of the times!
- Most of us don't even download music anymore. We stream it.
- The industry is in shambles, due to COVID and the increase in technology/accessibility.

So, I'm gearing up to sell my CD again, along with other new fun things in the days to come. Why, might you ask? Because I have no current gigs, and I still want to be an artist who makes a living with creative endeavors! What a crazy concept!

To be honest. I also want to help others get their stuff out there as well. I want to "document" the journey as much as possible.

-Tyler

by Tyler Williams

Hello, and a happy Saturday to you.

Why do this blog? Why share my thoughts so often? Why try to stay creative during this horrible year?

Because, we all need each other to help each other.

Many of my closest friends know that I have a complicated relationship with social media and the pitfalls of it. We all struggle with the new smoking habit, known as "scrolling"...I'm trying to utilize it and yet respect it at the same time.

This is just a strange time to reconfigure the plan, internally. The music industry is in a black hole right now. I feel it, my friends feel it. Most non-musicians can't even begin to grasp it. It's just kind of become the way it is, for now.

Where we are at:
- Music sales are declining (CDs, downloads, etc...), but social media is winning!
- COVID, of course (shows canceled, tours canceled, etc...), but, video conferencing is up!
- Digital streaming has replaced so many things (it's relatively affordable, convenient and vast), but, tangible connection to the musician isn't what it used to be.

Anyway, I guess I probably sound like an old man about this sort of thing, but, I've come to realize more recently...If you can't beat 'em, Like, Subscribe and Scroll...carefully!

by Tyler Williams

Last night I decided to reacquaint myself with an old friend that I don't reach out to enough these days. I'm very lucky to have her in my life.

She's provided for me in many, many ways. Musically, financially, and she still holds her beauty after all these years, inside and out!

Thank you my friend. Thank you for giving me a little encouragement last night, to keep the music going and flowing.

by Tyler Williams

I've been working on decluttering and minimalism for a couple of years now. I am truly enjoying the small steps leading me to more peace and purpose. It is not an easy process.

By doing this is not only to create more space, but, it is so I can become more creative in my space! (See what I did there?)

Anyway, I'm going through a bit of a personal "revelation" about my vast collection of music (CD's, vinyl, sheet music, etc.) and how I feel about it. I'm also digitizing many things and use many online tech tools to access things on a daily basis, as most might do these days.

I'll check in tomorrow.

-Tyler
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/64901902020-12-02T12:00:00-08:002020-12-03T11:12:28-08:00Only For Now
December 02, 2020

by Tyler Williams

I had a weird dream last night about a terrible weekend (that didn't actually happen) during my days on tour with the wonderful show, Avenue Q. It was a weekend with a matinee and the setup in the music pit was a disaster for me...

The show was in the middle of unloading and setting up in a huge stadium (indoor football) type of place. It was not a typical theater in any way. The energy felt like a crazy fun house with unnecessary stuff all over the place. Yes, I believe there was even a "fun house" mirror near the stage entrance. Things weren't working out in the setup, especially in my tiny bass area. One couldn't even use a bow if they tried (the show calls for upright bass and electric bass).

During the strange dream, I couldn't seem to get back to my area in time for the show start. As I was frantically finding the "pit access," I always had the wrong cable or my electric bass would still be left on the tour bus...it was a bizarre loop of stupidity! I would be carrying a bunch of gear and then continue to not find the pit access. It was like a Spinal Tap moment on eleven!

Suddenly, after a few loops of the madness, the show would start with its unmistakable clarinet tremolo and playful piano part. Meanwhile (in my now nightmare) I'd still be carrying gear from the bus with sweaty, non-stage wear. Probably a white t-shirt and shorts. Or maybe I was naked? The pit access loop continued...

I guess this is probably a common thing with many of my musician friends in the business. We are all losing our collective minds, and have no idea what lies ahead. More Zoom concerts? More considerations in other fields?

Hang in there. Hang on to hope, and take care of yourself and the loved ones. Start with yourself. It sounds cliché, but it is absolutely true. All of this is only For Now. (some friends from Avenue Q put this video together)

Tyler Williams

Hello friends! I’d like to present a review of “R & B Hits From Yesterday and Today”

Please enjoy!

This is classy collection of various R & B cover songs brought to you by singer, Sujana Chand.

- featuring AJ Braman (keys, arrangements, production)

- Aaron Tully (bass) & Antonio Romanelli (drums) on “Fell In Love With A Boy”

There are so many timeless tunes on this album with classics including “Greatest Love Of All,” “Saving All My Love For You” (Whitney Houston), and a personal Burt Bacharach favorite “Walk On By” (Dionne Warwick). The songs are stripped down to the basic essentials and are truly refreshing to my ears.

Sujana's vocals are lyrically clear and smooth to the ear while showcasing her impressively expansive range. AJ's dynamic, subtle touch (with a few harmonic surprises) always seems to honor the essence of the tune. I also enjoyed his arrangement of “Kiss of Life” (Sade) with a bit of a faster, club-influenced nod.

Please support this wonderful singer and buy this album! She's offering a special on it for the holidays. Get it here.

by Tyler Williams

Today is the beginning of a new week and yet the last day of the month. What a year. Can we restart it please? The time is flying, yet the days melt together.

I'm juggling a few things with this blog. I really want it to be its own website someday, but for now, having it here keeps me going, and I don't have to deal with programming or html formatting!

I think on Mondays it might be kind of cool to share things I am finding valuable with Music and Tech. On Tuesdays I can go a little deeper and send out the newsletter...I'm still figuring it out, and just sharing my journey with you via these daily check ins.

- Musically, I've been kicking around some prog rock band playlists and randomly found these guys. Nuclear Power Trio Their videos are disturbing and entertaining at the same time!

- Tech wise, today is Cyber Monday, and Philip Rothman covers some deals on his wonderful curated blog about music notation. His podcast is great too.

That's all for now!

-Tyler
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/64880412020-11-29T12:10:00-08:002020-11-29T18:58:56-08:00Blackhole Cyber Monday Son
November 29, 2020

by Tyler Williams

I told you this blog would be about intentionality. And it should be, dammit!

So, I have been following The Minimalists for a few years now. In their recent podcast #262/Materialism they discuss thoughts about society and our relationship with material goods. There's even a notion that we just might not be materialistic enough! (that's actually a quote from their wonderful documentary)

Anyway, we are all subject to the lure of finding the "best deal" - but it still comes with a cost to occupy the thing. It may take more car insurance, more gas money, more storage space, more bank payments and worse yet, time. If you buy that new shiny dress, are you keeping the 5 other dresses you haven't even tried on in years? I don't own a dress, by the way, but you get my point.

The Minimalists are extremely intentional and provide some of the best tools I've yet found on helping people simplify their lives. I shall refer to them often!

Stay safe,
- Tyler

P.S. You might want to sleep on that Louis Vuitton sleep mask before you make such a purchase? Or maybe, it could replace the other 850 sleep masks you've been hoarding! Google it for the price, if you so dare. It’s crazy...
TylerWilliamsMusic.comtag:tylerwilliamsmusic.com,2005:Post/64873552020-11-28T11:51:11-08:002020-11-28T12:00:03-08:00RIP Tony
November 28, 2020

Are you getting tired of the same old holiday music?

I certainly am...

I watched a wonderful documentary last night entitled "Jingle Bell Rocks!"

It's a fun exploration into the strange underground holiday music scene. I've heard some similar alt holiday music featured on "Sound Opinions" (NPR).

Here's a link to the trailer. I loved it!

by Tyler Williams

Some years ago, my girlfriend and I had a wonderful dinner at Lotus of Siam (https://lotusofsiamlv.com). After the meal, we received the token fortune cookie, with a simple message that has been quoted many times on a day such as this.

It is a very simple message, and now I'd like to call it an homage to my then girlfriend, now wife! I'm also grateful for the following.

- family
- friends
- music
- connection
- hope

A shout out to my buddy Tom and our mutual appreciation for Spongebob. Enjoy this classic song about today's subject!

Ok, more serious music and tech is coming your way. Stay tuned!

by Tyler Williams

I should be writing this on a plane, or at least in my sister's extra guest room...but, I'm not. I'm still in Vegas with my lovely wife and elderly sweet cat. I hope 2021 will be different for all of us. Wash your hands and wear a mask!

To blog about a blogger.

Seth Godin has been an influence to many writers in the blogging world. He's also written some kick ass books. In this short blog he describes his thoughts on blogging everyday or at least the challenge of the first 1,000 days in a row. Wow!

I'm shooting for 100 days in a row. It's a bit ambitious for me, but as one should know, habit creates habit. And I need a new habit. I will be blogging daily, but will only send a newsletter out once a week (Tuesdays) to my wonderful subscribers. Thank you for signing up!

In the meantime, I'm assembling some pretty cool people to be interviewed and featured on Hear Me Blog. (via Video, audio or text) Many wonderful musician friends have already written to me and are very interested in sharing their story!

Anyway, this is only day two and it feels pretty good.

by Tyler Williams

Dear 2020, please go forth and fornicate with thyself. In the meantime, how about another blog on the internet?

Let’s do this.

Small accomplishments need to be celebrated. Just getting out of bed can be truly liberating. Hell, if you can make the bed after achieving morning consciousness, you deserve a nice coffee. I prefer to grind the beans for even further satisfaction. I’m serious. Celebrate the small stuff.

Savor your coffee or drink of choice. Take a picture of the food you are able to eat… I spent an hour today walking in a park in Las Vegas, with several human beings who were quite possibly wondering about their next meal.

I’ve wanted to start blogging for a long time. I’ve studied countless greats and have mentioned it to friends and family too many times to count. Earlier this year my buddy Mundo told me I had mentioned it (The Blog) to him in 2016. Oh well, it’s never too late to start! Thanks Mundo. I needed that.

This is my first post. I want to keep it brief to keep you coming back. I want to write about music, technology and intentionality. I want to tell you about people I admire doing really cool things - in a format that’s away from the social media noise. The past few years I’ve given a lot of thought to the world of minimalism and a “clearer” path to intentionality. It’s not easy to downsize or simplify, but it always feels better to get to the essentials.

I also want to write about music. Music I love. Music you might someday love. And, how technology helps (and hurts) the war to create it. I usually like computers and my vast collection of “devices” to make things work together. I want to share some information that has helped me and will hopefully help you too.

I also need to acknowledge some really important people in my life. Mom and Dad, thanks for having me! Dena, you have supported me for a long time - talking about this endeavor. Thank you! My dear sisters, family and wonderful friends across the globe. Thank you for making me a better person. A better communicator. A better musician.

These are bizarre times. I’m grateful for the good years and look forward to seeing progress in our world. Celebrate the small stuff and move on the best way you can. I hope you find value in my new blog.

Intentionally yours,

Tyler
